Having Nightmares Whenever Blankets Aren’t Over My Head?

Question

I’m 16 and this has been happening ever since I was little. When ever I go to sleep I have nightmares when I do not have the blankets over my head. This doesn’t happen all the time but 98% of the time it does, I have no idea why and its really annoying, can any one let me know why this happens please ?

Answer

If you can’t remember your dreams when the blanket is over your head then this may actually mean that this isn’t really an issue with nightmares. It’s more of an issue with not being able to dream in general. The nightmares are just a sign that you have fears or anxiety that you need to deal with.

The lack of fresh air may be what stops the dreaming. Dreaming is often hampered when detoxification is impaired even in the slightest because toxins can interfere with acetylcholine. A lack of fresh oxygen in your body while sleeping may slow down your body’s rate of detoxification.  The blanket may also reduce circulation similar to sleeping on your arm for too long.

For example, many people notice they can dream better when sleeping on their backs as opposed to their sides. This is usually due to pressure being taken off the kidneys which allows better detoxification and less interference with acetylcholine in the bloodstream to the brain.

I suggest you stop sleeping with the blanket over your head and try to record your dreams for at least a week.  Then use our dictionary to see how the symbols may be indicating a problem you have so that you can try to find a way to confront the  problem that is triggering your nightmares.   This may stop the dreams from happening altogether.

Dreamed Of Invisible Lizards

Background Information

The dreamer feared losing their friend.

The Dream

“i was dreaming that i was crawling under bleachers to hunt invisible lizards and i had a blanket with me for protection to wrap the lizard in when i got close to a wall i caught one then second on started attacking me after that i oke up and had my nails dug into my thigh which really hurt what does this mean ?”

The Interpretation

Lizards in dreams usually reflect fears.   Your fear of the potential to lose your friend is probably what the dream is pointing to. You may have heard a rumor or can’t see any evidence that you’re friend is angry. The blanket in the dream is probably symbolizing you reassuring yourself or comforting yourself that everything will be ok as you looked for a way to resolve the problem in the friendship.  The invisible lizard is a metaphor for your fear of the reasons your friend is mad at you that you can’t see the evidence of.

Out Of Body Experience Stuck To Ceiling

Background Information

The dreamer frequently takes an amazonian spiritual tea called ayahuasca during spiritual retreats in the jungle.  The tea is known to have profound spiritual or psychological benefits with many people getting breakthroughs in one sitting that could take 30 years of therapy.  The dreamer is beginning to find that this tea is  not working as good as it did when they first starting taking it.

The Dream

“I was stuck the ceiling looking down at myself sleeping.”

The Interpretation

Most people who have out of body experiences may actually be experiencing a dream symbol that is reflecting their own awareness of themselves not doing anything or not progressing in some way.   The out of body experience you had while looking down from the  ceiling probably reflects your own awareness of yourself having reached a limit spiritually with the tea and noticing yourself not progressing at all.

Dream Of Utopia And A Giant Grasshopper

Background Information

The dreamer has older daughters that have moved out and they they don’t feel good spending time with.  One of their older daughters can’t be trusted with drugs and makes the dreamer feel used.  This daughter is also pregnant and the dreamer feels they they are probably going to be forced to take care of the child.

The Dream

“My dream starts in Utopia, a beautiful clean happy city where there are no crimes and everyone is living a perfect life. I go into a rooming house to get a job as a cleaner. The ladies are very friendly, I would be a part of their “Group” eventually. We all go out to the City to socialise, everything is good, then we see what appears to be a homeless man, alone. Part of the deal in living in Utopia is you have to belong to a group, so we are looking at him with concern. Then a huge crowd starts gathering in the City centre, including the homeless man, we are all curious to what is going on. Then suddenly a huge Grasshopper appears, we are scared, but then reassured the grasshopper is there to eat the homeless man as he doesn’t have a friend or belongs to a group; and this is the requirement to live in Utopia. If this rule is broken or you no longer have a friend or a group, the grasshopper comes to the City centre and eats you.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this means??
Thanks!”

The Interpretation

The dream sounds like it’s reflecting the relief and stability you felt after certain members of your family left. I think this represented in the Utopia.  The city reflects social interaction with others and in this case it’s most likely pointing to contact with older daughter.  Grasshoppers in dreams usually represent a person in our lives that always seems to outsmart us or embarrass us once we care about them. This sounds like a reflection of your feelings about this older daughter. You sound concerned that if you open up to her she is just going to use you or make excuses about why she needs you doing things for her.

I think the dream is a sign that you are having a problem putting your foot down and communicating your boundaries with this other daughter.

Dreamed Of Being Lost

Background Information

The dreamer’s Grandfather died the day after this dream.  The city of Charlotte is not a very interesting or significant place for the dreamer.

The Dream

“I was on the way home from school, but got lost. It was night and I wasn’t sure where I was at. The roads didn’t look familiar at all, and neither did the road signs. I was in the country but looked to the right of me at a stop sign and noticed Charlotte, which I’m about an hour from and rarely go there. The thing that was so strange was that the city looked to be burnt. The buildings were still standing, but looked like ash. There was also some fog, so it looked really creepy. There were no lights or anything on in the buildings; just an abandoned burnt down city.”

The Interpretation

If your Grandfather just died then the dream could be reflecting this situation. If Charlotte isn’t very significant to you then it may reflect a social interaction with others that doesn’t feel important. The feeling you may get from Grandparents because they are so aged you don’t know what to say to them. If Charlotte burned to the ground it may be reflecting your regret that you didn’t do more to spend time with your grandparents. It may also reflect your feeling that your grandparents were just people you noticed on holidays, special, occasions, or only when you had to and now you’re left with a blank spot in your life with their death.

Night time in the dream may represent your feeling that life after their death is not as good as it used to be.  A feeling common to people who have experienced a death.  The burned down abandoned city theme may reflect the relationship with your grandfather that is forever lost.  The feeling of being lost in the dream may represent how new and unpleasant this experience feels.

What’s interesting about this dream is that if it is reflecting your emotional state after realizing that your grandfather had died it’s an intuitive dream because you had it the day before.  Some people may not believe in that sort of thing, but even science is starting to notice dreams reflecting the day ahead.

Dream Of A Hollow Moon Filled With Billions of Birds

Background Information

The dreamer is experiencing a lot progress in their personal life after years of struggling.

The Dream

“Russian astronaut lands on moon walking in a giant robot, jumps, lands and breaks through the crust of the moon to find it completely hollow inside and filled with billions upon billions of tiny mechanical flying birds guarded by one giant bird protecting the entrance of the hole made by the robot. The Russian who had been summoned as the messenger from the bird to tell the world the end is near and that the birds will devour and destroy everything on the earth. The Russian then gave the guard bird a kiss the lips and gave thanks for sparing his life. The giant/man bird stood like stone and never moved.

This is by far one of the most bizarre dreams in my life thus far. What does all this mean?”

The Interpretation

The dream sounds like a reflection of how much more liberated you feel. The Russian astronaut represents an aspect of yourself that is all controlling and exploring completely unknown areas of your life.  Possibly a sign that you were too concerned with limiting yourself or were too concerned with controlling someone else.

The moon symbolizes an area of your life that noticeably amplified.   In your case landing on the moon may reflect a risk you took or the end result of decision you may have thought was crazy.  When you realized the moon was hollow this probably reflected your realization that your problem had no substance or power. Like an empty threat or an illusion.

All the birds inside the moon reflect all the freedom that you realized is now possible. Something that was always there and you just didn’t believe in it.  You can transcend your problems.

The only thing in the dream I would be concerned about is the Russian ethnicity because it appears all the way to the end of the dream.  It may be a sign that you are still controlling yourself too much or telling yourself that you can’t do something that you probably could do.  Alternatively, the Russian could reflect how you are still harboring a need to control someone else even after you achieved your desired success.

Question About Dreams And Medication

Question

All my life I have had very vivid, detailed dreams. When I was a child and teen, these were usually terrifying nightmares, so bad that I was afraid to sleep at night. As I’ve gotten older (34 now) my dreams have gotten a lot more fun and interesting.

A few months ago, I went to see a doctor as I’d been feeling down and she told me that I was pretty depressed and also had anxiety issues. She put me on medication, Cymbalta for the depression and a sedative to take before bed that also helps with my high blood pressure. I will be the first to admit the medication has helped, but sometimes I forget to take it.  My point is, when I forget to take my meds, as I did last night, my vivid dreams return in epic form. I have to admit my dream life, as scary and weird as it can be, is something I really enjoy. I feel like I’m seeing all these other worlds and lives unfold before me, and I’m bummed that the medication that helps me also takes a lot of this away. Do vivid dreams have to go hand in hand with my depression and insomnia? Do I have to give up one to lose the other?

Answer

You should try adding the following vitamins to your diet to see if they can replenish what the drugs are depleting. B5, B6, and Choline (Citicoline is best).   What’s probably happening is that the drugs are somehow destroying or depleting the acetylcholine that your brains uses to dream.  If you haven’t tried it already you may want to experiment with some natural alternatives to deal with depression such as GABA or L-Theanine to see if you can get off the drugs completely.  You may also benefit from regular use of a device called the Bio-Tuner (BT7) by Sota Instruments.  It’s very effective at treating anxiety and depression.  As an added benefit the Bio-Tuner is also a really good dream enhancer.

Dreamed Of Moving And Hating It

Background Information

The dreamer is noticing themselves aging.

The Dream

“This is a reoccuring dream, though different in some ways. It is an early morning dream and very vivid, after I wake up and go back to sleep. There are lots of people from my past….ex husband, ex lover after my divorce(no love relationships currently and I didnt think I care about that but now wonder) Sometimes the move involves not knowing where i am and being lost, locked out, without my belongings. Sometimes my grown children are young and I don’t know where they are, or they are in a locked room in a big hotel and I dont have a key to get to them. Last night I dreamed I broke my front 2 teeth and was trying to find a dentist b/c I had to go to work. Help me figure this out.”

The Interpretation

Houses in dream symbolize our perspective on a situation. If you feel forced to move then this symbolizes a change in how you view your life that is being forced on you.   Being forced to move could reflect your view of aging being something you have no control over. You can’t emotionally access the feelings of youth anymore.

The second dentist dreams supports the symbolism of the first dream.  The broken teeth is most likely reflecting your insecurity about aging or your feelings that you are no longer attractive anymore.   A dentist in a dream is usually a symbol for a something in our lives that is unpleasant, but good for us.  If you broke  your teeth and want to find a dentist this is most likely a sign that you are not happy with your appearance or aging and want to find a solution even if it a lot of work or costly.

Dream Of Being In A Silver Room

Background Information

The dreamer has been molested and their mother just found out about it.

The Dream

“OK so in my dream last night i was spending time with some little girl. At some point she gave me a map and showed me where her “silver room” was. When we went in there it was basically just a plain white room that looked kinda like a nursery. This room was protected from “shadows” though. Whenever shadows would start to appear, they would all get sucked out the room for a while. There was a bucket full of toys that where supposedly “pure” from evil. The toys that i played with where some of those cute little troll dolls with the wavy colorful hair. I think someone was sitting in a rocking chair but i could not see them.

Any ideas?”

The Interpretation

The beginning of the dream with the little girl showing you her silver room most likely reflects how embarrassed or “screwed over” you feel as life seemed to intuitively make sure your mom found out about your molestation.

Silver in dreams usually reflects intuition, luckiness, or coincidences.  Rooms are part of your life or a part of you.  In this case the silver room reflects to topic of molestation that has coincidentally informed your mother.

These shadows in the dream that you want to avoid sound like symbols for the inability to escape discussing or thinking about the molestation. Just like a shadow, the issue of molestation always follows you around in life.

I think the dream is a sign that you feel embarrassed that your mother found out and don’t like having to keep noticing the issue.  Like life just keeps bringing it back in your face no matter what happens.  Perhaps, you just need to tell your mother that you’d appreciate her not bringing it up all the time and this you feel the topic is embarrassing.

Dream Of Climbing An Octopus Mountain

Background Information

The dreamer’s boyfriend has left on a vacation and they are struggling to deal with the separation.

The Dream

“So for some reason in the dream, I told off a friend’s mom that she is selfish and insincere ( I don’t know why and I can’t recall who’s mom).  I left the room and stepped in to a temple like space with monks but didn’t dwell too much.  Immediately I went inside a shop selling what looks like really fancy smoking pipes, but they are actually ceramic instruments. I blowed in to one and played some keys like a recorder.  The owner of the store decided to take one other girl and I on a mission. We went out in to the back and it was like a mountain with tree roots surfaced and moss growing all over the place. The dream registered it as a giant sleeping octopus. We climbed on to the top of it, did some magical thing, and a little opening appeared for us to jump in. We did and it became like an octopus tank. It started moving on to the street and it felt like a video game. The girl an I each had a camera for aiming fire (or octopus juice) at things we thought were enemies)..at the end we were lining up at the arena to be a part of a battle against others who looked like transformers…”

The Interpretation

The dreams sounds like you are struggling to trust your boyfriend.   An octopus in a dream usually reflects behavior that is concerned with total control or powerful neediness.  This octopus mountain you climb sounds like a symbol for the enormous challenge of overcoming your need to be involved in every aspect of your boyfriend’s life.

The dream is probably just a sign that you need to try harder to give your boyfriend some space and trust him.
