River

To dream of a river represents feelings about confronting negative situations, difficult problems, or uncertainty in your life that is temporary. Directly confronting obstacles, unfamiliar situations, or unwanted changes that are necessary in the interim or as part of the "flow of your life." Feelings about emotional situations, life transitions, or periods of instability that require you to keep going while adapting to changing conditions. Bad moods or temporary fighting. A short-term busy schedule. Negative or uncertain situations that challenge you with progressiveness (e.g., fever or flu) requiring staunch short-term persistence or courage so that you can "get through" them. Events that carry you forward whether you are fully prepared or not. Feeling the potential to be swept away by circumstances, emotions, or life changes that seem beyond your control.

To dream of crossing a river represents feelings about confronting and moving through a temporary difficult or uncertain phase in your life in order to reach a new stage. Unpleasant situations that are temporary. A temporary obstacle of uncertainty that requires persistence to quickly overcome. Short-term difficulties you need courage to overcome. A conscious effort to endure a difficult period because you believe there is something better waiting on the other side. Feelings about needing to take risks, trust yourself, or commit to change while dealing with instability or emotional pressure in the meantime. Moving through a phase prior to achieving a goal.

To dream of floating down a river in a boat represents navigating temporary difficulties or unpleasant situations. How well you sail down the river reflects how well you are dealing with problems in your life.

To dream of a dirty river represents your feelings about a temporary problem or obstacle being very immoral or questionable. Feeling that you may temporarily have to face a short-term problem that is exceptionally unpleasant, distasteful, or requiring you to endure other people having no ethics. Temporarily confronting a very ugly situation.

Positively, a river may represent your ability to take chances in social situations or to try new things you've never tried before.

To dream of a frozen river may represent a freezing of temporary difficult or uncertain situation that you don't want to take a chance on. A freezing of your interest in taking chances in life. Shutting yourself off socially or allowing yourself to feel old. A lack of progress in resolving uncertainty, conflict, or personal struggles. Fear that a temporary problem may become permanent.

To dream of a river overflowing represents feelings about a temporary problem becoming more unstable or dangerous than you first expected. A temporary or short-term challenge may be starting to feel more difficult than you first expected.

Example: A woman dreamed of throwing large stones onto a frozen river to break up the ice and get the river flowing again. In waking life, she started to get over her son's and husband's deaths and began living again. In this case, the frozen river may have reflected her feelings about "getting her life moving again" after a long period of emotional numbness and grief by connecting with friends and family or making plans.

Example 2: A woman dreamed of seeing a red river. In waking life, she was experiencing her menstrual period. In this case, the red river may have reflected her feelings about the temporary emotional discomfort, inconvenience, and physical changes associated with menstruation.

Example 3: A woman dreamed of looking at a river and seeing two men fighting. In waking life, she was debating whether to leave her husband and move to another country. In this case, the river may have reflected her feelings about leaving her husband being a temporary moment of uncertainty that she had to "cross over" in order to be happy with a new life.

Example 4: A young man dreamed of sailing a small boat on a river. In waking life, he was experiencing fighting with his father that he believed was temporary, but necessary. In this case, the river may have reflected his feelings about navigating a temporary period of emotional conflict and instability in his relationship with his father.

Example 5: A young man dreamed of having trouble crossing a river. In waking life, they were having difficulty having the motivation and energy required to study hard enough to pass a difficult test at school. In this case, the river may have reflected his feelings about confronting the temporary but difficult challenge of needing to study hard enough to avoid failing his test.

Example 6: A woman dreamed of needing to cross a river. In waking life, she was experiencing a lot of grief over the death of a loved one and was trying hard to get over her grief. In this case, the river may have reflected her feelings about needing to emotionally endure and move through a temporary but deeply painful period of sadness and emotional instability in order to move on with her life.

Example 7: A woman dreamed of jumping across a river. In waking life, she was very uncomfortable as she tried to escape friends who she felt were becoming a bad influence. In this case, the river may have reflected her feelings about confronting a temporary but emotionally uncomfortable social situation that required her to quickly distance herself from unhealthy influences in order to protect herself.
